Lucy Chung May 13, 2010 Research Paper: Hip Hop History Hip Hop is widely known all over the world. It started with the word rap: it’s a slang term for conversation. With some beats put into a poem, and some scratching on a record, Hip Hop was born. Some of the first forms of Hip Hop were record scratching. It’s not for sure but legends said that Theodore Livingston from the Bronx of New York City was trying the stop the record from playing when his mom called him. He experimented with record scratching from then on and became well known as Grand Wizard Theodore. He eventually joined a group called the “Fantastic Five”. Another well-known figure was a man with the name of Clive Campbell also eventually moved into the Bronx of New York City from Jamaica. With his Dj-ing skills and his friends freestyle rapping, they soon formed a group called the “Coke La Rock.” As one of Campbell’s childhood memory, he threw a party for his little sister and he was the DJ. They charged twenty-five cents per entry and made over three hundred dollars! Other forms of Hip Hop can even be a producer. They do various jobs from mixing and blending beats and acoustics, from managing an artist’s profile. Some examples of producers can be from Pete Rock to Swiss Beatz. A major form of Hip Hop is also dancing and break-dancing! Break dancing is a more technical form of hip hop dancing and includes a lot more energy and strength. ABDC (America’s Best Dance Crew) is an excellent example of break dancing. They incorporate a lot of choreography and also a lot of stunts. There are unlimited new moves in the break dancing industry. The most known break dancers are known for originality. The panels are ABDC always mention originality, character, etc. Anyone could do the windmill, or fantastic flares. Not many can put their own style into their moves though. That’s what sets apart the normal dancers from the unique ones.
